Winter Warm-up (22/03/2019)

Captains Message

First of all a big thank you to all those who turned up on the day, we had a good breakfast, the weather was cold but dry, tee’d off at 10.30.

The course was in very good condition, and everybody seemed to enjoy the course, it was good for low and high handicappers alike.

It was nice to see new players and some existing players that we didnt see much of last year.

Some of us retired to the Farmhouse for a few drinks and well deserved meal

May Day Madness (11/05/2019)

Captains Message

Originally we had 6 teams of 3, but 3 players dropped out so ended up with 5 teams of 3.

The breakfast was ok, but some thought the toast was iffy.

First tee off was 10 am, very overcast and not much sun, but dry.Around about 1pm the heavens opened up and the temperature dropped and we had hail stones for about 20 minutes and rain stopped play. The water was quickly soaked up and off we went again, getting back in at about 3 ish

A few of us retired to the Farmhouse for an enjoyable evening meal and just a few libations.

Thank you to all who turned up and played.

Thanks to Nick for his help in booking and dealing with the course, and Chris for organising the finances and start sheets etc, Andy for all his work on the IT

Hope to see you all at the next venue East Brighton, for the Anniversary cup 15th June.

Regards
Peter

Anniversary Cup (15/06/2019)

Captains Message

We had the best turn out of players so far this year and for the last year ( 21 in total,) so a big thank you to you all for supporting the society.

A big welcome to our 2 new members, Trevor Warner and Keith Owen, also to Phil Underhill who has decided to sign on again.

We had an excellent Bacon roll, and coffee prior to teeing off

First tee off at 12 noon 3 and 4 balls, 2 buggies

Although he technically had joined at breakfast Trevor Warner was awarded best score for Guest.

We had a 2 course meal afterwards of Steak pie and Sticky toffee pudding, (which I felt was not up to standard)

A few of us then retired to The Farmhouse for a “de-brief” and celebratory or consoling drinks!!!!!

I would like to thank all of you who helped with the organising of this event, Chris Miller, Andy Addison, Nick Harris, and also Paul Harling for work on the Handicaps.

Additionally I would like to mention 2 players unable to attend through health problems, Richard Waddington, and Peter Kay, I’m sure you will all join me in wishing them both a speedy recovery, and we hope to see them at future society days.

Just to remind you all, that our next outing is Sweetwoods which is a very popular venue, on the Fri 5th July, this is Captains Day, so would like to get a record turn out, please try and bring a guest along if you possibly can, guests can turn into members !!

Happy golfing !!!

Regards Peter

Captains Day (05/07/2019)

Captains Message

We had a great turn out at Sweetwoods, 22 players including 2 guests, and 2 lady players

A good breakfast and then Tee off starting at 10.30. 3 teams of 3 and 3 teams of 4.

The weather was idyllic, the course was in great condition.

Congratulations, to all of the winners, and everybody who took part, it was probably the best FH golf day we have had in a long time. Particularly to Trevor for his fantastic 37 points (not bad for an Octogenarian) and Peter for his nearest the pin (which apparently was a bit of a fluke, don't take my word for it, if your brave ask Pete to talk you through it - you probably wont have to ask him, he will talk you through it anyway)

Look out for the next calling for Silvermere Friday 2nd August, and do try to bring along a guest, guests usually become members!

If any one has any suggestions for venues in 2020 let me know and we will try to include it.

Summer Shield (02/08/2019)

Captains Message

What a great turnout for Silvermere, with 29 players this was the highest number that we have had for a long time, thank you all for supporting the society.

A big welcome to Tony Scott and Neil Ellis, our two new members on the day. We also had 4 guests and I hope they all enjoyed it. Please keep inviting guests along as they can turn into members! The course itself proved challenging, with two incredible finishing holes. Whilst some of the fairways were not in good condition, we were able to pick and place to compensate.

We had a new addition to the generous suite of prizes, being a straightest drive nearest the white line. A certain player didn't quite grasp this concept and thought it meant nearest the white line extrapolated 50 yards longer!

Drinks on the patio to watch the groups coming in, chipping over the water to the 18th green, were followed by a barbecue outside. Whilst we didn’t quite get the BBQ package we were promised, we still ate well whilst comparing total ball losses. Many thanks to Bill Ballard who kindly donated £20 for the person losing the most balls on the 17 and 18. I think we’re still calculating who won that!

The top three all scored 34 points so well done to everyone, but there has to be a winner, well done Tony McClean

Also my thanks to Chris Miller, Andy Addison and Nick Harris for all their hard work, without which these events would not take place.

Look forward to seeing you all at Park Wood on Saturday 7th September. Park Wood is a great track with some wide fairways and forgiving greens so I hope we see another big turnout.

Kind regards

Peter

Tavistock Cup (09/09/2019)

Captains Message

Dear Golfers,

Parkwood was a new venue for most of us, and one reason it was picked was because it had nice wide open fairways not much carry, and on the face of it an easy course for the higher handicaps amongst us, how wrong can you be?

What we didnt know was that the greens were all like glass, and the pins in very difficult positions, having been prepared for a competion that morning. This had the effect of making it a very difficult course to score on, I dont think we have ever had scores that were pretty much all bunched together so much, which proves it was a great leveller for hi and lo handicaps alike, (apart from one individual who I shall refer to later). I also guess there were an awful lot of 3 and 4 putts.

The weather was dry but both hot and cold at times, I don't think I would like to play it in the middle of winter.

However not withstanding this, it was a great day and everybody enjoyed it except for Phil Underhill, who went home early not feeling very well. Phil hope you are feeling better now.

Breakfast was plentiful and well cooked.

26 of us tee’d off, which again is a good turnout, including 2 new members and a big welcome to them Peter Turner and John Redfern.

Autumn Plate (04/10/2019)

Captains Message

Dear All,

Pyecombe was a challenging course, and not helped by the reasonably short downpour.

19 played including 2 guests, breakfast was good and plentiful.

We tee’d off at 11am, the course was in very good condition, the greens were fast, and a lot of approach shots were going out the back of the greens.

A few of us celebrated/commiserated later at the Farmhouse Pub with a few light refreshments and some alcohol.

Just a reminder for the next meeting 1st November at Cottesmore, and then only one more after that Christmas Texas Scramble and Christmas fayre at Horne.

And finally a big thank you once again to the team that makes these events a success:
Andy for his work on the Website and keeping in touch with everyone
Chris for all the work he does as treasurer and on the golf days
Nick for booking the courses and generally helping with card marking etc and thanks to Tony at Pyecombe for assisting with scorecards
Paul for scrutinising the scores/cards and up dating the handicaps

kind Regards
Capitano
