A fantastic start to our season with 24 players out at our first event, all keen to blow off the winter cobwebs & get out and play some golf. The course was in great condition and the sun came out to take some of the chill off.
With the cold & heavy March air, the course played quite long so congratulations to Steve Gibbons for winning the day with an outstanding 37 points. A big thankyou to Helen & Peter Wickens for sponsoring the day with wines by Stuart Broad. Ian Skingley won the raffle for the 4-ball voucher. Many thanks also to Jo Selsby for helping me out on the day.
We had some tasty lasagne and garlic bread at The Farmhouse in the evening followed by a huge cheeseboard and some epic Epoisses.
Our next event is on Friday 11th April at North Downs and the first calling will be out for that soon. Looking forward to seeing you all so that we maintain the good numbers.

We arrived at North Downs to bright blue skies. The breakfast was plentiful and good quality. It was a day of records with 32 players including 9 ladies. We had 4 new members of which two were playing and 3 guests who will become members.
The day soon heated up to 23 degrees and great to see everyone in their summer outfits in early April. The course had obviously not had rain for some time and there was a lot of run on the ball. Sometimes not to your advantage due to the sloping fairways. Despite this Nigel Brooke-Harte finished with a magnificent 38 points to finish in 1st place. The guest prize was won by Karen Cottle again with a magnificent score of 38 points, A big thank you to Sid and Vanessa for sponsoring the day and presenting some imaginative prizes. An extra thank you to Vanessa for helping me collect and check the cards.
We had another record for the evening meal with 26 attending. We dined on a very popular request of Paella 'a la Tom Traszko' the chef followed by the usual good quality cheese and biscuits.
Our next event is Surrey National on Friday 16th May. The calling will be out soon and looking forward to us breaking more record numbers. Looking Forward to seeing you all again.
Many thanks to all those that attended Bill

The golfing gods were good to us yet again and we arrived at Surrey National in the sun. We had 24 players including Jamie Pearce who was playing as a guest.
The good weather continued for the rest of the day, but sadly this length of hot weather is beginning to affect the fairways. They are bone hard, and the course is very hilly with sloping fairways, making it very difficult to keep your ball on the fairway. If you did however, players were hitting some impressive length drives. There were some good scores though. The long-range forecast is for some much-needed rain, hopefully not when we are due to play!! Embarrassingly I Presented the cup to myself with 37 points beating Nick Harris on count back. A big thank you to Jo Selsby and Ian Skingley. Jo for helping me with collecting cards and the conducting the two raffles. Ian for sponsoring the day and offering generous prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places together with two N.P’s and one N.P. in two.
The evening meal was attended by 11 people, with the usual good quality food at very reasonable prices.
The next venue is Horsham on Saturday 21st June. The society encourages captains to choose 3 courses to be played on a Saturday, to hopefully reduce the number of “workday competitions” giving a chance for more members to attend.
Thanks for all those that attended making it a very enjoyable day for all. Bill

The weather was kind to us yet again and if anything was a touch too hot. We had 27 players including Alex Ballard, Gary Mullan, Paul Sherar, Alan Cottle and Karen Cottle playing as guests.
The course was in excellent condition considering the long spells of hot weather we have been having. The greens had obviously been watered well and were receptive to a high ball. There were some excellant scores with the top three in the 40’s. There were 3 x 5 pointers on the cards also. I am sure Paul our handicap secretary is going to have some fun. The prizes were presented by the day’s sponsor Chris Miller, a big thankyou for his generosity. There were prizes for 2 x N.P.’s, 1 N.P in two, one Longest Drive and 1st 2nd and 3rd prizes. A new trophy was presented by Tracy Traszko our landlady, the Tracy Lea Trophy, a big thank you also for her generosity. A big thank you also to Helen Wickens who filled in for Jo Selsby in collecting the raffle money.
The evening meal was attended by 17 people, with the usual good quality food at very reasonable prices.
The next venue is Captain’s Day at Tyrells Wood on Friday 18th July.
Thanks for all those that attended making it a very enjoyable day for all. Bill

Captain’s Day and evening meal was fantastic and had many good reviews from both members and guests, which means a lot. I’m deeply grateful for everyone’s participation and support.
The day started with bacon rolls and coffee. The weather yet again was good to us, if a little too hot. The course was in great condition considering the many preceding dry hot days. Tyrrells Wood is a hilly course with plenty of bunkers and therefore a good test of golf. We had 28 attending including three guests who all will become members in due course.
There was one 5 pointer on the cards. We don’t normally see them, but this is the second time in a row. A new Captain’s Day Shield, engraved with all the winners of this event over the past 10 years was on show and will be kept in the trophy cabinet once this year’s winners name has been engraved. There were trophies presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place together with two nearest the pins and one nearest the pin in two. Congratulations to Derek Wells for winning the day!
A heartfelt thank you to Jo for issuing and collecting the cards promptly allowing us to complete the prize giving in good time. The trophies were presented on the patio overlooking the 18th green while a few well-earned drinks were being consumed.
The evening meal was attended by 14 people. It was Salmon and Prawn Thai Red Curry followed by Keylime pie and the famous Farmhouse cheese board.
The next venue is Lingfield Park Golf Course on Saturday 16th August which will allow those members that can’t make weekdays to play. Looking forward to seeing you all there. It will be sponsored by Paul and Gill Brack.

We had an amazing turnout of 34 players including 4 guests. This was the biggest field we have had so far in 2025 and Lingfield were very helpful with the extra T times that were required.
The weather was good for golf but felt rather chilly to start due to the exceptional hot weather we had been used to previously. The day started wonderfully with a bacon roll, coffee, and lots of banter. The course was in reasonable condition considering the small amount of rain and hot weather we have had and like many courses the fairways had started to suffer. This did not stop some very good scores from members though. We had a top score 38 points that was decided on count back on the last three holes!! As the last two months there was another 5 pointer on the cards, this time on a par3!!
A massive thank you to Gill and Paul Brack for sponsoring the day and providing prizes. Thanks to all the committee members that have helped me arrange this meeting. As usual thanks to Jo on the day for organising the raffle and collecting the cards after a long day to enable us to get on with the prizes as quick as possible.
The evening meal was attended by 13 people and enjoyed by everyone!!
The next venue is Westerham on the 11th September, a favourite course for many members. Thank you all for your continued support and interest in the events.
Many thanks to all those that attended Bill

Thank you all for making this event so enjoyable. It was wonderful to see so many of you. We had a turnout of 28 players from 48 members, which is now the average turn out this year. It included two guests Simon Morley and Tony O’toole who both thoroughly enjoyed their day and are going to subscribe to the mailing list on the web site.
The weather forecast on the previous two or three days wasn’t looking good, but we were pleasantly surprised on the day. The early groups managed to get round without getting wet, but the later groups did face some strong winds, a heavy down poor with claps of thunder. It didn’t last long though and the sun was soon out again. With the recent rain the course was looking fabulous. There were however some bare patches on the fairways which is the result of our hot summer. The Farmhouse preferred lie rules overcome this problem. The view from the clubhouse of the 9th and 18th fairways and greens is the best view of any local golf course. There were some very good scores with 9 cards between 36 and 38 points. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd places were decided on count back. The 1st and 2nd on count back of the last 3 and the 3rd on count back of the last 6.
A massive thank you to Tony McClean and Nick Harris for sponsoring the day and providing prizes. Thanks to all the committee members that have helped me arrange this meeting. As usual thanks to Jo on the day for organising the raffle, collecting the cards and now being our official photographer for photos to appear on our newly created web site gallery.
The evening meal was attended by 5 people , but as a small group I took the opportunity of pre-ordering Chateaubriand, which was delicious and was washed down with a few bottles of Rioja.
It would be good to see even more of you at our next event which is Betchworth on the 13th of October. I haven’t played Betchworth this year and am very much looking forward to it. Many members have expressed their liking of the course and don’t want to miss it. Thank you all for your continued support and interest in the events.
Hope to see you all soon. Bill
